Ls400 "in Great Condition"!

$

It's worth posting this just because it's so bad!

I went to Horsham in Sussex today to view a green 1999 LS 400 V203 ELL

If it appears again, and I'm sure it will, don't bother if you're looking for one.

The eBay listing said "In great condition, inside and out" They also said it has full service history, and a cam belt change.

I went out the back where it was parked, the first thing I saw was a fair sized dent in the drivers door, with a smaller one behind. a piece of chrome trim hanging off, a broken rear light, tyres with shiny edges, a rust bubble on the rear wing, and a mouldy boot interior. The aerial didn't work (although he had a spare) and the bonnet wouldn't stay up (but I suppose that's expected)

The wheels were very bad. I popped the bonnet, and held it up with a stick, the transmission oil was brown, and the engine oil was dark and only came halfway up the dipstick.

There was a VSC check message displayed on the dash. The interior was so filthy that even a professional valeting company may have declined to do it. I tried to start the engine but it was completely out of fuel. Then came the service record. The last stamp was in 2007 which meant there was 90K and nearly 9 years of non history.

Still, on the positive side, it had 3 keys and the steering column motor worked, but that was it. And I nearly forgot, there was some damage to the internals of a headlight and a chip on the windscreen. Sad really to see such a car totally neglected, and it's only had two owners from new!

Back In The Ls Fold And A Big Thank You!

I want to say a big, big thank you to Steve the moderator who very kindly went to Pontefract to look at an LS400 for me. He even paid a deposit!

It saved me travelling 270 miles to see a car that may have been no good.

All I've got to do now is get up there to pick it up!

Thanks again Steve, you're an absolute credit to the LOC, not everyone would have gone out of their way like that!

Keys!

Hi Guys,

Bought my 2004 IS300 just before xmas, noticed the key started getting a bit dodgy. then it broke while I was at home, so I though 'no problem I have a spare!' put that in turned it and it sheared straight off!!!

seen you can get replacement off ebay easy enough, looks like my keys are ebay replacements already.

was just wondering if there was a permanent solution to this as it looks like an obvious common fault. I was thinking along the lines of someone making an all metal one or something, instead of flimsy plastic? must be something alternative out there!

Lost Membership Card

Morning all,

Not sure if this is the right place to be posting this, mods feel free to move it if needed :)

I received my renewal pack a couple of months ago, and I've put it down somewhere, it's then been tidied up, and I've lost the membership card. I'm taking my IS in for service at Lexus Reading next Wednesday, and I've been asked to show my card to qualify for the club 15% discount.

I've placed a support request for a new card in the relevant section of my profile but nothing has happened on that since Tuesday. Clearly I'll be needing the card pretty soon, so is there anyone I can PM about this?

Thanks in advance :)

Sam

I hate this forum layout. The lotus one has it as well and I find it so much more clunky to navigate. Also, I can't see a 'what's new' button so i can't browse new threads.

Dealership service plans vs. owners' club discounts

Afternoon all,

So I took my IS250 in to Lexus Reading for its 80k service yesterday, and we had a bit of a chat about service plans, since I'm doing about 20k a year in that car. They printed out an example of what the standard service costs would be, compared with the costs on the service plan. Unsurprisingly the service plan comes in cheaper. What's interesting is that I then worked out the costs of the standard services with the owner's club 15% discount, and that's cheaper still. Full details below:

2 year plan based on 4 services, standard price:

80k £519

90k £245

100k £669

110k £245

Total £1678

Service plan total cost £1560

Owners club discounted price:

80k £441.15

90k £208.25

100k £568.65

110k £208.25

Total £1426.30

The service manager said that he'd seen several owners' club members before, and some had service plans while others used their discount cards, but none of them had ever actually worked out the costs in front of him. My membership here has already paid for itself several times over in savings, but this shows quite nicely how much it helps :)

Dirty cars stripped of Best Buy awards

Under this headline in the February edition of Which? are the following two paragraphs.

"We've analysed unique emissions data for more than 300 cars and discovered that 95% of all diesels and two thirds of petrol cars can't meet official emission limits in our tests.

"Based on these findings, we've stripped Best Buy awards from five cars, listed right. These cars may have scored highly in our tests on aspects such as performance and comfort, but they are some of the worst offenders for emissions. They push out so much NOX or carbon monoxide in our more realistic tests that they exceed official 'Euro 3' limits set last century, which we think is unacceptable. See are full findings on p20."

The five cars listed are BMW X3 (2010-), Lexus IS (2013-), Lexus NX (2014-), Mini Cooper (2014-) and Toyota Yaris (2011-).

23 Best Buy awards were also removed from cars implicated in the Volkswagen Group scandal.

How to get the "Latest Posts" button back

$

I've seen a few of you mentioning you'd like the old "Latest Posts" button back and it turns out there is a way to easily do it yourself. Follow instructions and it only takes 30 seconds

First, go to club activity, click my activity streams and create new stream.

Then, name it "Latest Posts" or whatever you so wish. Select the options you can see in my screenshot below and click "save as new stream".

You have now set up your stream, but to get the button back you need to click the little tick highlighted below. Once you have done this your "Latest Posts" button will appear in place of unread content.

To make it look the same as the old one you will also need to toggle "show condensed view" but that's personal preference.

Done. Simples :wink3:

Airbags

I was always under the impression that car airbags were something like a quickly inflated baloon but didn't realise the technology behind the system until I found this regarding the chemical reactions that occur during its deployment and all this in less time than it takes to blink!

"It takes three reactions to operate an airbag. Everything begins with a pellet containing a mixture of sodium azide, potassium nitrate and silicon dioxide. During a collision, a deceleration sensor ignites the gas mixture, causing sodium azide to decompose into nitrogen gas and sodium metal. The nitrogen gas inflates the bag, but sodium metal is potentially explosive, so a second reaction occurs to remove it. This involves sodium reacting with potassium nitrate to produce potassium oxide, sodium oxide and additional nitrogen gas. The metal oxides, also unstable, then react with silicon dioxide to produce silicate glass. And it all happens in 40 milliseconds."

If you're going anywhere near the airbag system always disconnect the battery and then wait at least 10 minutes as the ECU has back up power which needs time to discharge, if you are not sure get the experts in. These things can save you from serious injury but can result in it unless treated with respect.

Just watch these idiots for how not to safely discharge one!

Anyone live in Bury St Edmunds?

A bit of a long shot.

There's a breakers in Bury St Edmunds that have a front grille for an LS400 but they won't post.  So I wondered if anyone in that part of the world would be able to pick it up and get it packed and posted to me.  A bit of an ask I know, but it's worth a try.

Thanks

Phil

Which Insurance?

Going on a comparison sites for new insurance, these are the first and last quotes for an LS400 from Money Supermarket.com

The first is with Privilege @ £168 fully comp with NCBP

The last is with Model Driver @ £99,987.65 And apparently, I get this "bonzer price" by having a Model Driver black box fitted!

A though decision which will need some serious thought.

Navigation failure (brand new)

My wife has just collected a brand new CT200h Advance, which comes with Lexus Navigation (but not premium).

On its second journey, having played about with the navigation settings, suddenly the system stopped working. If you click either "MAP" or go to "Setup->Navigation", nothing happens.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Considering a Gen3 GS

Hi All,

I own a 2000 IS200 for the past 3 years. Although I dont use it much (hate driving it in traffic), its proven to be an awesome reliable car. I am considering buying another Lexus.......either a 2007/2008 GS300 or a 2007/2008 IS250. I love both cars and cannot decide which one I should get next. The GS is not as sporty looking as the IS, but for some reason, I have been perving over the Gen3 GS for a while.

Is either of the cars any less reliable than the other? If buying either, could you guys possibly give me any pointers as to what I should look at for? Common issues and stuff like that.

Any input would be appreciated.

Looks like im coming back for a fourth time.

After a pair of GS300s and LS400 DHP, im starting to hanker after another one.

I went down the German route and had a play with a Mercedes 500SL. I would quite happily still have it but my old TR7V8 that i built and sold back in 02 came up for grabs so it had to return. Madness. Selling a Merc for a ricketty old Triumph with a leaky Roof, keep fit windows and bits that fall off. Listening to that V8 though with TVR style sleeved Exhausts makes up for all its idiosyncrasies.

Anyway, the TR is going nowhere. I really fancy a Chimaera but im the wrong side of 50 now and its hard enough fixing the TR every week so a Chim isnt really going to happen. Its an SC i fancy. Rare, ugly, underated, V8, rear wheel drive, convertible. It ticks all the boxes. LPG conversion and im happy.

Any colour bar Siver.

Watch this space.

Finally Moving On........

Well, after 9 years of of enjoying Japans finest, I'm moving on.

I have a buyer for for my LS and I'm moving over to a Mercedes. Shock, Horror I hear you say.

I have my reasons. I love my Lex but the insurance costs have gone out of the window and above the top floor. I cant justify paying it for a vehicle that last year only covered 2800 miles. This is despite max no claims and zero convictions. My other half has got herself a little Daihatsu Copen which she worships and because of that, the Lex gets even less use. As well the Lex making way, I'm selling my Stag after 22 years of ownership. This means I have a big huge V8 hole in my life which is where the Mercedes slots in. There should be a 500SL coming to fill the huge shoes that will be left when both cars go. The Camper Van and MX5 have a stay of execution.

I have to have another V8. It has to be convertible. It has to be available with cheap Classic insurance. It could have been an SC430 if it could have ticked the last box.

So maybe a backward step from the Lex but a forward leap from Triumphs finest underrated British twin cam marvel. I'm looking forward to getting my hands dirty because I know it wont have the Swiss watch reliability like the Lex but the sound of that V8 with the hood down will make me forgive all its Idiosyncracies.

So its good bye from me for now until MK1 GS300 Sports in Pearl White become available on cheap classic insurance. :crybaby:

Faith restored

Forgive a bit of a self-indulgent post, Lexus friends. But...

This evening, I managed to get out of work just after five and it was still light and the sky clear. So, sunroof open, beanie on, temperature to 26°C and fans to auto! My normal 40 minute commute turned into a meandering nearly two-hour trip home, some A-road blasts, some lazing through villages. Great to hear the Blackbirds and the Robins in the trees, and the sweet sound of the 2JZ-GE through the railway bridges. By the time I got home, my shoes must have been hot enough to melt the glue, but it felt brilliant. Quite an unexpected pleasure on what had been just another working Wednesday; certainly more than my morning commute in unrelenting darkness! Faith restored in my old Lexus after a big bill for new front calipers, carriers and disc skimming. I've been pondering something newer after that hurt, but really, what is worth me financing £200 to £300 per month? It would need to be quite some car.

Have any others here had a similar revelation?
